You are partially correct.

On my Gutsy install (I think installed from the desktop CD, as opposed
to the Alternate CD) the esound program was NOT shown as installed but
the esound common was shown as being installed.   As soon as I installed
the esound program on the Gutsy computer and restarted the next time
around the logout sound worked perfectly.

On my Hardy installation on a separate computer (it was installed from
the Alternate CD version - final release of Hardy) the pulse-audio-
esound-compat WAS installed by the logout sound did NOT play properly.
As soon as I attempted to install the esound (which at the same time
uninstalled the pulse-audio-esound-compat), and then restarted the
computer, the next time around the logout sound worked perfectly.
