I hope your patch (or maybe a more polished version) will get integrated in the next release. Do you have a package for this, or is there an easy way to apply it (sorry, I'm a dpkg rookie)? Otherwise I'll just wait for a while, I can live with it if will work eventually. But you are right, it is really bad for new Ubuntu or Gnome users, so it should be resolved as soon as possible.
