I can confirm all the behavior. Do not work when opening with double click, and do works with Load Images or with Previous/Next.
In my case, it happens with PDF, DOC, MPP and TXT attachments. Works OK with JPG attachments. Sometimes, the PDF icon shows the Adobe Reader icon (I have both, Document Viewer & Adobe Reader) and some times shows a "white page" icon. Word documents display a "white page" icon. Enabling or disabling Compiz has no effect. No additional info if I run form console either.
