It seems cups isn't accepting configuration changes, and gnome-cups-manager 
ignores ~/.cups/lpoptions.

If that file is coppied to /etc/cups the changes are seen and applied. It must 
be something related to running things with suid. If gnome-cups-manager is run 
with sudo, the changes get applied too.

Should this message have something about things don't work: 
CUPS-Add-Modify-Printer: Unauthorized? It shows in cups' logs.

This and samba issues should be critical bugs, "oh lets print... hmmm it 
doesn't work... damn Linux!" ;-P
