The capable players do list themselves fine on the sound menu in ubuntu 13.04 and clicking on the entry opens up the respective player but sadly play/pause, previous and next controls don't work as they should.Worth mentioning however that the sound menu picks up the current play status i.e, if media is being played, then Play changes to Pause & vice-versa. Clicking the controls however don't work in neither VLC/RHYTHMBOX/TOTEM.
