The desktop-neutral parts could probably move to fd.o if that's a concern. The point is that if you want zeitgeist in the GNOME desktop, it needs to use GNOME infrastructure. "Because we like our workflow" isn't a good enough reason to use 3rd-party providers (which I'm sure is a fine one). The project might as well be on sourceforge, or google code, it wouldn't change that problem.
