Title:
Screen corruption on radeon driver in 1080p

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-ati” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
At the beginning I should note that I am using graphics stack from
ppa:oibaf/graphics-drivers to have some additional driver features
enabled but the problem is exactly the same on stock system, even on
LiveCD, and affects me for quite a long time now.

When using radeon driver on my Toshiba A300-1EG (it has Mobility
Radeon HD3470) with external 1080p screen, there are many glitches in
displayed image over the whole desktop. The problem gets more
intensive if there are many changes on the screen, e.g. when moving a
  window around.

Problem exists only on 1920x1080 resolution on both external monitor
and external TV, both connected via D-Sub. Other resolutions are not
affected. Using 1080p screen in dual head with internal 1280x800
screen is also working fine, although it is very slow.

I have searched the Internet for other radeon-related tearing and
flickering problems but didn't find anything with symptoms similar to
this one. It looks like randmly flashing horizontal lines all over the
screen and when moving a window or displaying a video, sometimes the
  whole screen flashes.

I recorded a video showing how it looks (warning: 88MB):
  https://dl.dropbox.com/u/407948/20120902_114804.mp4

I also noticed that the problem disappears on low power profiles of the GPU,
but it is then to slow to deal with compiz responsively so I consider it a weak
workaround.
Video showing how it works in both low and high power profile (warning: 97MB):

Note: the same happens with Gnome Shell instead of Unity or even with
  KDE.
