For what little it's worth, I haven't experienced this crash again, but
after a bumpy period I stopped running concurrent X sessions.  X
stability has been much nicer in general, though, since the time when I
reported this, during a period when several releases were described as
"Merge from unreleased debian git".  Thanks.

  I had two X sessions, for different user accounts, running when this
  crash happened.  This report was uploaded after a reboot.  I could ssh
  into the system, but the screen was black and unresponsive.  Alt-Sysrq
  attempts had no effect.  Thanks.
