Thanks for the link Kai-Uwe, although I'm not sure what suggests it is a vendor 
driver issue from there (but I'm far from an expert).
That link does confirm the colour issues in this bug on the affected OS.

Comment #10 here shows the testing by Gyuris that with the same official
driver the printer works perfectly with Cups under 10.04 - 11.10,
versions 1.4.3 - 1.5.0, but following a change in 12.04 / Cups 1.5.3 it
prints very strange colours.

FWIW I'm running on i386 - officially supported OS by Xerox.
