@Stefan: Are you still facing the problem? And do you find the above
symptoms on you machine too??

IIRC the problem Stefan was having is that Apache runs as httpd and this user wasn't in the unix group that was granted access to the underlying hardware. Apache starts as root and drops privileges so it things would start out good but ultimately fail.

Are any errors being logged to the Apache error log?
