I can only think that either it's searching a defunct datasource that has no records in or that there is an error occurring in there somewhere that has a cftry / catch around it-- in the catch it's then not throwing the user off and pretending nothing has happened. Then, hypothetically, your results page has default parameters set so doesn't worry it's not being passed the correct data...
