$ grep magic_quotes /etc/php.ini 
magic_quotes_gpc = Off
magic_quotes_runtime = Off    
magic_quotes_sybase = Off


and it seems to be intermittent - but really I am not seeing ghosts - I have 
today seen two e-mails that magically were truncated at an '!' character when I 
hit the reply button - firefox 1.5.0.1/ Linux.
