I have been using/testing xstream as a replacement for serialization and to
use xslt transformation with filter. 
The advantage is you can simply send the same message to different client/
server and apply xslt transformation within a filter depending of what you
need them to receive.
 The major drawback , is performance (as with any xml serialization ) vs
normal serialization and you need to fine tune the configuration of your
threading model so you can optimize thread usage for the xml parse
/serializer.
