I finally had time to work on this.  I downloaded  the document at [1] and
I could edit the flat version of that. Strangely, I also edited the version
of that document that I originally tried. My original version had been
edited by me and Keith some time ago to update it to AOO 4.1, so it has
recorded changes and some comments. So, at the moment, I can save a flat
version of an odt and then edit it but I have no explanation for why
editing previously produced a file that would crash AOO.

I cannot install the xml filter on my Mint system (Linux Mint 21, Cinnamon
64 bit). When I select the jar file, AOO crashes instantly. I hope I'm not
doing something stupid.
