We used the ! idiom extensively in the WW MailReader and WW CookBook

As I understand the next WebWork release, 2.2.3, it will be mainly just a bug
fix release and avoid untested new features. Wildcard support was built into
XWork 2.0, which requires Java 5 and has seen considerable work since it was
branched. Of course if it was really necessary, support could be backported,
but I wouldn't recommend it for a minor release since wildcards need to be
tested more thoroughly to see how they affect other parts of Struts.
