Hi, I don't think sample.war is generated during the build: it's a static file that lives at http://svn.apache.org/viewcvs.cgi/tomcat/container/tc5.5.x/webapps/docs/appdev/sample/.
Are you saying the md5 checksum for one of the distro binaries itself is wrong? I've been generating them the same way for a couple of years now, right on minotaur with the default md5 command, the same one that virtually every other Apache project uses to sign its binaries...
