Ubuntu Karmic has a Gnome "Mouse Properties" setting that lets you
disable the touchpad while you're typing.  Presumably either this is
upstream, or can be ported to Fedora.  (Of course, you don't want to
have the kids switch to Gnome, fix the touchpad, and switch back to
Sugar, so it's all more complicated.)
