Summary: IMAP daemon sorts mail folders incorrectly in some clients

Mitel Networks has become aware of a problem with the IMAP server
distributed with version 4.1.2 of the e-smith server and gateway.
A replacement package is now available from ftp://ftp.e-smith.com/

Effect:

Mail is correctly delivered to IMAP folders but newly arrived messages
are listed in the incorrect order. These messages will be listed as the
oldest messages in the mail folder, rather than the most recent.

Please note that mail is correctly delivered and no mail messages
are lost.

Update:

Apply the update by running the following commands (as root) at the
command-line prompt:

    FTP=ftp://ftp.e-smith.com/pub/e-smith/updates/4.1.2/RPMS/i386/

    rpm -Uvh $FTP/imap-4.7-1mdir8es.i386.rpm

No additional actions are required on the server for this update to
take effect. However, all users will need to close current IMAP
connections and reconnect in order to see the fix to the sort order.
This is typically performed by exiting and restarting the mail client.

If necessary, you should refer to the e-smith.org Technical FAQ for
instructions on how to access the command-line prompt:

    http://www.e-smith.org/faq.php3#8q3

Customers who have support contracts with Mitel Authorized Partners may
seek assistance from those Partners.

Workaround:

We recommend updating all 4.1.2 servers with this package.

As an interim course of action, users may be instructed to check for
new mail at the start of any IMAP mail folders. Alternatively, sort the
mailbox by Date order, rather than by arrival order, if this option is
available on your mail program.

Explanation:

The problem is an example of the "billion second bug" that has been
reported in various forums. Simply, UNIX counts time as the number of
seconds since January 1st, 1970. This recently (in the past 24 hours)
clocked over to 1 billion seconds, introducing an extra digit into
this counter.

The IMAP daemon that ships with e-smith 4.1.2 does not sort messages
correctly once this extra digit is introduced. The update described in
this announcement fixes this problem.
