It's a while since I contributed to the is list, but I still try to dip into it now and again. I'm interested to see you are discussing DD and human health.
It reminded me of a conversation that I had with the local doctor at Fantsuam in Nigeria a couple of years ago. I may have mentioned the conversation before before, but it may be worth sharing with new list members. Just to give a little local flavour to the story: Dr Chris is part of the rural community where I was staying. I had visited his home and eaten there, so when I fell ill we already knew each other. I had been on a drip for a couple of days when we had the conversation. Dr Chris had called in to see how I was doing. As I was starting to feel stronger and able to respond to visitors, he settled down on the chair and chatted for a while about this and that. (It came to me as a surprise that the doctor was visiting me as a person and not just a hurried house-call!) One of the things that he told me related to digital technology - it was the difference it made to him to have a phone. Before he had a phone no-one knew if he was at home or if he was travelling for a few days. He lives where he works and when people are sick they are often brought to him from a considerable distance. Before he had his phone they would arrive on his doorstep sometimes when he was away. He hated to come home and find they had had a wasted journey. Thanks to the phone people could now contact him before setting out on a long journey, so they could be sure of his attention on arrival. He had his phone with him as we talked, so if he was needed suddenly he could know. When it comes to digital technology comparatively simple things can make a big difference.
