It took several years (and job titles) for me as well (though I'm not 
necessarily a “real” interaction designer), getting the “final” understanding 
by studies concerning industrial design (where Ralph Caplan helped a lot) as 
well as art (Da Vinci, ironically), among others.

Anyway, I tend to claim that mere decoration (that still appears to be confused 
with design too often) will become almost equally important as a crucial aspect 
of how to create pleasant experiences.
