Bryan, that's great. It's been pointed out more than once that we're
discussing the issues outside of context, and without examples. This
really helps. We should do more of it. 

The first dimension that I would add to your designs would be colour.
You are using (I think) standard html buttons, and elements of
additional design that many websites use can impact usability.  If the
primary action had a strong colour, it could do a lot to counter
position, and fit better with the mental models that others have
referenced.
