LMS and its cache is on the Pi's SD card, too - but what difference that makes I don't know. I think the scan was quicker when LMS was on the external disc but didn't actually keep a note. Unless there's something quick and easy that will bring the full scan time down to minutes, I'm content with what I've got - I do a full scan when I've added new albums, usually no more often than once or twice a month.
