Not able to use format attribute of the

I am using displaytag 1.1 for my project.
While using the format attribute in the displaycolumn
like
<display:column property="brand" format="brand is {0}" title="Brand"
sortable="true" headerClass="sortable"/>
While executing this jsp throws exception
org.apache.jasper.JasperException: /search/floor_plan_result.jsp(20,4)
Attribute format invalid for tag column according to TLD
at
org.apache.jasper.compiler.DefaultErrorHandler.jspError(DefaultErrorHandler.java:39)................
brand attribute is String type with in a bean object., with this format
attribute the jsp works just fine.
I haev one more question ... will I be able to use format tag for properties
like Interger (Price, area etc).
