Displaytag requires only a List object (or other object types; see the docs for acceptable object types) stored in some scope (request by default, but page, session, and application work with the proper qualifier). Any framework or lack thereof (i.e. plain ol' HttpServlets) will work. I use Spring mostly myself (I'm still working on examples for the FAQ and these will all be implemented with Spring, although I considered doing them with HttpServlets, but that's just too big a pain :).
