I've got an "export.types" line in my displaytag.properties file, with the value "csv excel" (no XML). Nevertheless, my tables with "export=true" all show an "xml" download link.
I know that my displaytag.properties file is being correctly deployed and loaded, because in the same file I've got the Excel download linked to the POI version, and that works.
