"ghost hits" are what make a break sound busy... the main reason people use loops, really. if you've ever tried to build a loop from scratch and found it to be kinda lifeless and simple, it's probably cause there's not enough going on... the bass drum and a hard snare are the skeleton, but the meat's in the high hat and ghost snare hits. you can make pseudo-ghost hits with delay since it'll be playing the hits at a lower volume after some specified delay time, but it's not the ideal way to go IMHO. make a pattern with a bass drum, high hat and snare, and then stick in some ghost snare hits (either the same snare slightly resampled down and lower in volume, or maybe a sidestick, a rimshot... anything inobtrusive)on some upbeats usually right next to a high hat, but not at the same time, and you'll get something more complex... then put it through a little delay and you'll get some thickness. if you take the amen into consideration, you'll find ghost hits in the 3rd beat. ghost hits are a human thing worth emulating.

I've read in music production books (not dnb) they're useful for delays and have heard people on the list say there snares that are lower in volume than the main snare. I'm just a little confused as to what they do. If this is all that they do could you not put in a snare at a lower volume, or is that what it means? Hope this makes sense Cheers Andy --- Drum&Bass Arena Producers Discussion List http://www.breakbeat.co.uk You are currently subscribed to dnb-prod as: [EMAIL PROTECTED] To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED] --- Drum&Bass Arena Producers Discussion List http://www.breakbeat.co.uk You are currently subscribed to dnb-prod as: archive@jab.org To unsubscribe send a blank email to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
