 Dear friends of Philippine liberalism,

November was an action-packed month for the Foundation. It opened strongly with
the much anticipated visit of the Acton Institute for the Study of Religion and
Liberty. Founders Fr. Robert Sirico and Kris A. Mauren were in town for the
film premiere of The Call of the Entrepreneur. Actons first venture into film,
the movie brings the message that business people have too often been
unnecessarily criticized as greedy when in fact society has benefited because
of them.

And still on the topic of business, the Foundation was one of the hosts of this
years annual Philippine Economic Society conference. Economists and business
people again reminded the government that policy alternatives are needed to
ensure proper development.

On a slightly more poignant note, we said good-bye to our partner of many
years, John Coronel. After eight years of building bridges between liberal
Asian political parties and their counterparts around the globe, John has
decided to leave his position as executive director of the Council of Asian
Liberals and Democrats (CALD) to do some personal travelling and maybe even
write a book. We wish him all the best.

Though John has left, CALD continues on. Its fifth communications workshop was
well-received by its member parties. Participants were able to learn from the
experiences of the recent Philippine midterm elections. Two case studies of
successful Philippine senatorial campaigns underlined the importance of not
only having an effective message but of the need to couple it with the
strategic use of all mediums, especially more modern ones.

The Asian young liberals were also busy this month. They gathered together in
Jakarta for a workshop on effective governance and citizen participation. No
less than former Indonesian President Wahid was on hand to encourage the young
leaders to engage government in order to keep it responsive to their needs.

Lastly, our 2008 International Academy for Leadership program line-up is out!
We are offering new topics for next year as well as repeating many of our
classic ones. Do check it out. Application letters and CVs may be sent to

Until next time & Stay tuned!

Active citizen participation is needed to safeguard government. In order to

responsible and effective governance in Jakarta, Indonesia from 22-27 November
2007. Hosted by Garda Bangsa in cooperation with the Indonesia Democratic Party
of Struggle, 25 youth leaders from eight countries gathered together to find
common solutions to the problems hampering good governance and citizen
participation in the region. More:

Economic Freedom of the World 2007 report Philippine edition

The Economic Freedom of the World 2007 report discusses the degree of economic
freedom around the world based on a composite index that includes: size of
government, legal structure and security of property rights, access to sound
money, freedom to trade internationally and regulation of credit, labor and
business in 141 nations. The report also compares economic freedom and other
desirable outcomes, such as prosperity or quality of life, as measured by the
UNDP Human Development report. It finds a strong correlation between economic
freedom and various important developmental goals. The Index has become an
important tool to evaluate economic policy worldwide.

 Liberal Perspectives on Philippine Education

Former Department of Education Secretary Florencio Butch Abad outlines the
crisis in Philippine education. Juan Miguel Mike Luz, International Institute
for Rural Reconstruction president, explores this further by discussing whether
the Philippines is educating for competitiveness or is barely trying to educate
for competence. Dr. Chito Salazar, head of the Philippine Investment Management
Education Network, proposes liberal reforms. Listen at:
