News Release January 9, 2001

What will the future Internet look and feel like? New Statesman New Media
Awards (NMA) 2001 launch to reward internet innovators who embrace the
future. http://www.newstatesman.co.uk/nma2001about.htm. Will the future
Internet continue to be focused on shopping, games and sport? NMA 2001
highlights innovative people, organisations or companies whose work

challenges prevailing notions of what the Internet should be in the
future. In particular, NMA 2001 will focus on the *'Digital Divide' - an
area government and industry are putting increasing emphasis on as
internet uptake rates continue their upward rise. How can all who want
Net access get it? If in the future large numbers of people do not have or
want net access should we, Government and industry just accept it? Is
Government right to consider interactive technologies as the way to
deliver a better, more effective civic culture? These are common Digital
Divide questions which NMA 2001 will address.

Each of the six annual awards highlights areas of particular interest and
concern. Nominations may be submitted by anyone via e-mail, fax or letter.
The nomination period runs from January 4, 2001 until May 30, 2001. A
prestigious judging panel including David Shayler, Lucian Hudson,
Government e-envoy and Michael Fabricant MP will decide the final
positions.

The six New Media Award 2001 categories are:
Merit Award
Advocacy Award
E-government Award
Elected Representative Award
Education Award
Online Communities Award

from all parts of the country. Nominations are free and open to all.

*'Digital Divide' refers to the growing disparity between those
who are already benefiting from internet access services and
those, for whatever reason, who are deterred or otherwise
unable to enjoy a similar level of access.
