Okay, it gets even better.  I booted into my himem kernel.  gears and all of 
the rss screensavers that I tried worked, but when I ran quake3 it 
spontaneously rebooted.  Fun, fun, fun!

So I guess I'll just miss out on that 100MB or so for now...
