Summary: Selectable Index in Advanced Search

Initial Comment:
In order to facilitate the search for users it would be
usefull to present them with selectable indices in the
advanced search. Many bibliographic databases got
indices some including number of hits.

With the new browse system this can be easily done a a local customization,
no need for a new feature anymore.

Hi nuncanada,

do you refer to:
http://bdjur.stj.gov.br/dspace/advanced-search ?
Then no, this is not the feature.

I don't simply mean the fields to be searched, but enhance
the way they are searchable. Making it possible for a user
to see the index belonging to a field and select values from
the index for his search.
Here is an example of such a search, to get an impression:
http://publica.fraunhofer.de/starweb/publica/servlet.starweb
It is not precisely what I want, the search of Inspec is
better, but at least this database is freely available, so
you can get an impression.

I have made our dspace instace (STJ - Brasil) go thru the
list of all possible indexable fields (as chosen in dspace.cfg).
Would that solve you problem?

I'm not at MIT, but I get the idea!

Yes, that sounds useful, and should be within the
capabilities of lucene AFAIK.

Hi Jim,

just can't find an open accessible example, but one widely
used database is INSPEC, you got it at MIT.
http://libraries.mit.edu/guides/cheatsheets/inspecguide/advsrch.html

The idea is that you got your advanced search interface:

Search Field Input Field Index-Button
...

Search Button

e. g.
You choose
Keyword Work
and press the index button

The user is now presented with that part of the index for
the keyword field, which starts with work and the number of
corresponding hits.

work* 5000
work 1000
workability 27
workaday 5
...

From this list he may select terms to search.

On the other hand the user may just search using the search
button, without bothering with the index.

Claudia
