Graham Triggs commented on DS-618:
----------------------------------

We definitely need to keep an eye on pre-requisites and recommended versions.
For instance, even if we kept version 8.2 of PostgreSQL as the minimum level,
there are still strong performance reasons to recommend 8.4.

If at all possible, we should keep an eye on what ships with, or is readily
available for the major platforms: Windows, MacOS, RedHat, and Debian.

For instance, right now the stable version of Debian has Maven 2.0.9 in it's
repositories - although there should be a new stable version of Debian before
DSpace 1.7 is released.

A simple table of pre-requisites vs operating systems (with the date that OS
was last checked) on Confluence ought to be enough to keep track of this - with
a call going out to the mailing lists as we approach a release if an OS hasn't
been checked in the last X weeks / months.

> We still recommend at least "PostgreSQL 7.3 or 7.4". 7.4 is now seven years
> old and losing maintainer support next month (or so). By December only 8.2
> and up will be supported.
> Sun Java 5 SE reaches its End Of Service Life in October 2010.
> Maven 2.2 is current. We might recommend at least 2.0.11 (the current "older
> release") rather than 2.0.8.
> Tomcat 4 is positively ancient and definitely unsupported by its maintainers.
> Even 5.0 is too old for help. 5.5 should be our minimum recommendation.
> Please discuss.
