I'm not coming from a Java background, rather from Linux background, one thing I never understood is why DSpace even does log rotation at all. Why don't we let tools that were built for that purpose take care of that? Doing this in DSpace then prevents logrotate & friends from working with logs simply.
I personally never set up logrotate to work with DSpace logs (most prominently compress them and move them away after a certain time period) just because DSpace splitting them up makes that non-trivial.
