Hi all
Another one of my clients is harvesting using OAI but wants to know how
to reference a bitstream (sigh, here he goes again, I hear you say). I
guess he's using OAI Protocol for *Metadata* Harvesting, not *object*
harvesting...still he would like to see some bitstream-specific metadata
(in particular, of course, the filename). I'm interested to hear other
people's workarounds (sounds a bit sacrilegious) for this type of thing.
I came across this snippet (I think talking about DSpace 1.1):
"Structural metadata in DSpace is currently fairly basic; within an
item, bitstreams can be arranged into separate bundles as described
above
<http://dspace-dev.dsi.uminho.pt:8080/common/dspace-docs-1.1.1-1/functio
nal.html#data_model> . Additional structural metadata can be stored in
serialized bitstreams, but DSpace does not currently understand this
natively. This will be an active area of future development of DSpace."
Other sites have commented on the possibility of extending DC to include
bitstream-level metadata. As I understand it, currently there is no way
to reference a bitstream from (DC) metadata. Is that correct? I guess
this issue will be sorted with the advent of of a METS ingester? Put it
on the "desiderata" list?
Cheers
