Well, MEA CULPA...I didn't cover all my bases.  It seems we were 
being crawled by a web crawler.
It was getting almost a denial attack--that is, the amount of hits in 
the little amount of time.
And my email account was getting 500 messages in under 2 minutes of 
Dspace errors.

All has been resolved by using  a "deny" feature in my httpd.conf 
file for that IP.

Apologies for this non-alarming issue.
