Actually, the good news is that now in 1.5.0 you can add descriptions to your contents file. We enhanced the ItemImporter in 1.5.0 with some modifications that Richard Rodgers provided to MIT Libraries for our Theses ingest process... http://dspace.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/dspace/branches/dspace-1_5_x/ dspace-api/src/main/java/org/dspace/app/itemimport/ItemImport.java? r1=2260&r2=2398 Where the new file format looks something like... 48217870-MIT.pdf permissions: -r 'MIT Users' description: Full printable version (MIT only) where permissions:[r|w]-['group name'] description: 'the description of the file' So you can actually control certain permissions on the bitstreams as well as the files description.
