This seems more like a hack now than it did at the time I wrote it. You add the collection or community ID to the path of the URL. For instance, if your normal SRU URL looked like this: me.edu/dspace/search?query=dog, you'd turn it into me.edu/dspace/search/collection123?query=dog.
