I believe the performance penalty João mentions stems from the fact that while DSpace communicates with the embedded Solr using direct Java calls, to talk to Solr on another machine it would have to use a network protocol, incurring overhead. I can't quantify that overhead. There's no information at all about embedded vs. remote on pages about performance.
