Well if you want to use the Gmail SMTP server, then you have to create
a _Gmail account_, otherwise the Gmail SMTP server won't let you send
emails through it. You then use this Gmail username and password in
DSpace configuration, as described in the blog post.

Other than that you still have the option 4), but I can't help you
with that - the sendmail guys surely can.
