Yes, I've verified again that commenting out the mail.server.username and mail.server.password in dspace.cfg and then restarting Tomcat fixes it. For some reason reloading the context via Tomcat admin didn't work...
For now I'll have to remember to comment that line out after deployment, or look into using authenticated SMTP.
