There might also be stuff in something like /var/lib/tomcat7. There is, in Gentoo: CATALINA_HOME=/usr/share/tomcat-7/ CATALINA_BASE=/var/lib/tomcat-7/ But that seems like doing it the hard way. You don't need to have a "dspace user" at all. All you need is your account for building (so that if you make a mistake, you don't damage Tomcat) and the account that runs Tomcat. And fighting your package manager seems like a great idea if you enjoy frustration. I actually tried this once. That's how I learned to never do it again. I recommend against it. -- Mark H.
