The 500 series record at 2.4X maximum for DVD+RW. The 510 does 4X DVD+RW burning, as well as having faster CD-ROM read and write speeds (as if it mattered anymore).
Supposedly, according to Sony, the 500 series isn't upgradable to to do 4X DVD+RW recording the way it was upgradable to do 4X DVD-R/+R recording, so they released a new drive.
