2008 MMAA CW CONTEST RESULTS. The results of "2008 Manchester Mineira All
America" (MMAA) CW Contest are now available at:

The CWJF group states, "If you were one of the participants, our thanks,

Mineira All America CW Contest will be expanded to include the five
continents and to separate the modes of CW and SSB into two different

3D2, FIJI (IOTA Op). Jan, OK2ZAW, will be on a holiday DXpedition in
May and will be active as 3D2ZW. He plans to activate a few IOTA using
his IC-706 (w/100 watts) into a vertical and dipole antennas. QSL via

40M DX HUNTERS NET. Net Controller John, VK6JB, informs OPDX that he has
been in the hospital for 7 weeks and is still recovering. He states, "I
have had a skin graft which is healing slowly and is still quite painful.
Others were trying to run the net while I was away but conditions were
bad and other problems persisted to make it difficult. As of this week,
we will be back in full swing with the net, so I hope that you will be
able to join us. Our regular nets are as follows: Wednesdays, Fridays
and Saturdays -- Usual time is at 1200z. The net is on 7093 +/- QRM.
So, starting April 8th, come and join us. We know that conditions are
not good but there have been some quirky openings on 40M, so come and
be part of the net. Hopefully you can make a contact with a station you
really need (a QSL or new country)." For more info about the net and

5C, MOROCCO (Update/IOTA Op). Alfredo, IK7JWX, updates OPDX on the QSL
and log search information for the upcoming DXpedition to activate Mogador
Island (AF-065), April 19-25th. He states, "Our plan is to upload logs
at least once a day, so you can use the LOGsearch page to see if you're
in the log starting the day after your QSO(s). The online lookup function
cannot correct any problems we discover in the logs. We will correct them
when back home. If your callsign is not in the log and you think it should
be, please use the LOGsearch by date and control band and UTC time. Only
if you find a typing error in your call, send an E-mail from the form.

8P, BARBADOS (NA-021). Richard, G3RWL, is once again active as 8P6DR
from here between now and April 24th. Activity will be holiday style on
160-10 meters using CW and the Digital modes. DO NOT LOOK FOR HIM ON
APRIL 8th -- It is his wedding day! Over the past weekend Richard was

8Q, MALDIVES. Cliff, SV1JG, will be active as 8Q7SV between April 29th
and May 5th. Activity will be mostly CW and digital modes on all bands.

8R, GUYANA. Operators Dan/KE7TBB and his father Dan/N7EAA will be active
as 8R1AD between April 20th and May 3rd. Activity will be on 20 meters
using CW, SSB and PSK31. They plan to look for stations who are young
ham operators and running low power (kilowatt and under). QSL via N7EAA.
9A, CROATIA (IOTA Op). Zik, VE3ZIK/DO7ZZ, will once again be active as
9A/VE3ZIK from Bilice (Croatian coast) between April 12-21st. Activity
will be only on 40 and 20 meters CW/SSB. There will be a one day operations
from Ugljan Island (EU-170, CI-134) as well as Pasman Island (EU-170,
CI-085). QSL via DO7ZZ, bureau 100%. LoTW and eQSL is also "OK". Zik
really prefers paper QSL cards.
9H, MALTA (EU-023). Augusto, HB9TZA/I2JJR, will be on a short holiday
in Bugibba (JM75EW), St. Paul's Bay, between April 9-14th. His callsign
will be 9H3JR, but will sign /P around the islands if the weather is "OK".
His holiday style operations, both /P and from main QTH, will mainly be
SSB on 40 and 17 meters, but any band is possible (80-6m). He will use
a FT817 for portable operations, and an IC7000 with AH4 for his fixed
operations. The antennas will be a long wire, dipoles or a 10m fishing
rod, depending on band conditions, places and space available. QSL via

C9, MOZAMBIQUE (Another Chance!). If you missed the C91TX operation you
will have another chance to work another team of operators on a DXpedition
to Mozambique, and they will sign C91FC from April 9-13th. The "Fox Charlie
DXpedition" team is made up of the following operators: Philip/ON4AEO,
Kath/ON7BK, Sid/ZS6AYC, Adele/ZR6APT, Gert/ZS6GC, Lucas/ZS6ACT, Jan/ZS5JC,
Deon/ZS6ABR, Jose/ON4CJK, Herman/ZS5LH and Steffi/ON3AEO. They hope to
activate the following bands, 80/40/20/17/15/12/10 meters using CW, SSB,
RTTY and PSK. The QSL Manager is ON4CJK. Send QSLs either by the Bureau
or direct. It is requested that direct cards be accompanied with 1 IRC or
2 green stamps with a self addressed envelope (QSLs without this, QSLs will

CT, PORTUGAL (Lighthouse Activity). Members of the Algarve S.T.A.R. DX
Team are planning to activate a new lighthouse on April 18th between
0700-1300z. Activity will take place from Doca Olhao (Parsena Olhao)
West Lighthouse (ARLHS: POR-129, DFFA (Algarve Lighthouse Award) Fa-32).

CT3/CS9, MADEIRA ISLANDS. Operators Ulf/DL5AXX and Frank/DL8WAA will be
active as CS9L during the CQWW WPX CW Contest (May 30-31st) as a Multi-
Single entry. QSL via DJ6QT. They are looking for another operator to

DP1/DP0L, ANTARCTICA (AN-016). Felix, DL5XL, (member of the first German
over wintering team) is now active from the German Antarctic station
"Neumayer III" using his personal DP1POL callsign and working CW mostly
on 20 and 40 meters. Felix will be at Neumayer 3, until early 2010. QSL
via DL1ZBO. A new WAP reference number has just been issued to the Georg
Von Neumayer III Station as WAP DEU-08. More details can be found on the

DU, PHILIPPINES (IOTA Op). Max, M0GHQ, now active from here as DU9/M0GHQ
until the end of April, plans to activate the following islands sometime
during his stay: Cebu Island (OC-129), Mindanao Island (OC-130), Samal
Island (OC-235) and Leyte Island (OC-129). Activity will be on 160-10
meters on SSB, PSK and RTTY using 100 watts and wire antennas. There may
be some 6 meter operations. This past weekend Max was heard on 20 meters
RTTY. QSL via his home callsign, direct or by the bureau.
HG160, HUNGARY (Special Event). Hungarian amateurs from the city of
Debrecen will be active as HG160FNY (as well as special individual
callsigns) until July 31st. Activity is to remind everyone of the
historical event 160 years ago (in 1849) where the Austrian army occupied
the Capital city (back then was Debrecen) and Transdanubium. Look for
activity on all HF bands including VHF/UHF using various modes (including
digital). QSOs are good towards the Commemorative Diploma. The principal
special callsign will be HG160FNY with different operators. QSL Manager
is Zoli, HA0DX. Special individual callsigns announced are: HA160DX
(Zoli/HA0DX), HA160KA (Istvan/HA0KA), HA160NDE (Vince/HA0NDE), HG160BW
(Imre/HG0BW) and HG160JUV (Vili/HG7JUV). Stations with individual special
callsigns will not have QSL Managers. QSL cards should be addressed to
the Central QSL Bureau in Budapest and should be handled as a conventional
card. A special QSL card will be issued for each contact with a special
station. For the Commemorative Diploma, you need one contact with a
HG160FNY station and two more contacts with stations participating in
the event with two different callsigns, independent of mode or frequency.

AS-126. Operator Tony/E21IZC and possibly others will be active as
E21IZC/p from Lipe Island, April 12-13th. Activity will be
on 40/20 meters using CW and SSB. QSL via E21IZC.
AS-177. Operators Sara/VU3RSB, Frank/DL4KQ, Jose/VU2JOS, Yamini/VU2YAM
and Manju/VU2SMS are now active as AT9RS from Grandi Island
until April 8th. The following suggested frequencies were

EU-076. Fred, ON6QR, will be active as LA/ON6QR from Moskenesoy
Island, Norway, between 2100z, Wednesday, April 8th, and
0800z, Sunday, April 12th. Activity will be only CW running
QRP (5 watts) and mainly on 40-20 meters. QSL via his home
callsign.
EU-189. Theo, ON4ATW, reports that a Belgian team of five "well
prepared and trained Dxpeditioners" will attempt a landing
on Rockall Island between April 30th and May 1st. Depending
on the weather and sea conditions, they will be on the air
with two stations using the callsign MM0RAI/p for about 48
hours. Suggested frequencies are:

ADDED NOTES: Rockall is the summit of an old volcano located
between the north tip of Scotland and Iceland, sticking out 20
meters above the Atlantic. Landing on the 500 square meters
rock is very difficult as it has steep slopes at all sides.
The area is infamous for its high seas and very changeable
weather all through the year. For DXCC purposes, it counts
as Scotland (GM).
SA-072. Members of the Teresina DX Group are preparing a DXpedition to
the Canary Island (DIB MA-05, DFB MA-11) on the coast of Piaui,
Brazil, between April 29th and May 3rd. Callsign will be ZW8BBC.
Activity will be on 160-10 meters using CW, SSB, PSK31 and
RTTY, including 6 meters, 2 meters (SSB/FM ) and the satellites
(SSB/FM). Satellites mentioned are: AO-7 (A and B), FO-29,
AO-51, VO-52, SO-50 and ISS in repeater mode, if activated.

HAMCALL WORLDWIDE CALLSIGN DATABASE NOW TOPS TWO MILLION CALLSIGNS. The
Web site at "HamCall.net" grows in popularity and content. It contains
data from over two hundred countries. "Buckmaster Publishing" is proud to
announce their HamCall Callsign Database now exceeds 2,000,000 world-wide
callsigns. First issued in 1989 on CD-ROM, HamCall began with only U.S.
callsign data then added International listings in 1993. Since then the
database and its features have grown steadily each year.

HB0, LIECHTENSTEIN. Kasimir, DL2SBY, will be active from here between
April 24th and May 4th. Activity will be on HF bands (80-10m) using CW,
SSB and RTTY. Equipment will be a TS2000, FT900AT, Ameritron AL811,
HF9V vertical and a monoband vertical for 30/40m. Activity will also
take place on 13cm and 23cm using EME. Equipment will be a FT726R, Dish 3,
7m, and 2 amplifier for both bands. Kasmir will use two separate callsigns
for this operation. For the HF bands, he will use HB0/DL2SBY and for
the EME activity will sign HB0/DF1SR. QSL via DL2SBY, by the Bureau or

KH4, MIDWAY ISLAND (Update). It was announced this past week by team
co-leaders Tom/N4XP and Dave/WB4JTT (edited): "We are pleased to announce
the anticipated dates for the DXpedition are now set for October 9-19th.
These dates have been selected to allow maximum operation for the eleven
days we will on the island and most importantly provide Midway Island
over two weekends. Logistical planning is under way and equipment is
being arranged. Plans for six stations to be located in two separate
locations are proceeding with two antenna fields feeding these two
operating sites. Modes will be CW, SSB and RTTY with at least one station
on 20 meters 24 hours a day to provide that new entity to those who need
it. A link is now provided showing the radio site at the X on the beach
area on the north side of the island where the operating positions will be
located. The DXpedition web site <www.midway2009.com> is fully functional.

LZ8, BULGARIA (Special Event). Members of the Bulgarian Federation of
Radio Amateurs (BFRA) will be active as LZ8WHST to promote the next World
High Speed Telegraphy Championship to be held in Obzor, Bulgaria, in
September 2009. This special callsign will be randomly activated by
several different BFRA operators from their home QTH and will be active
until the end of September. Operation will be 99% CW, with the possibility
of some occasional SSB and Digital contacts. Activity will be emphasized
during the championship, September 11-15th. QSL via LZ1PJ. QSLing will
start after the end of activation.
MRD 2009. Attention all former maritime radio operators and CW operators!
The "2009 Maritime Radio Day" will take place between 1200z, April 11th

7Q7AH and 7Q7HB QSL STATUS. Allan, G0IAS/7Q7AH, informs OPDX that all
QSL cards for 7Q7AH and 7Q7HB, that were received during the month
that he (G0IAS) was in Malawi, have been answered. Please be aware
that ROYAL MAIL will be INCREASING their costs in the middle of April.
Allan states, "Thank you everyone who worked 7Q7AH. Radio conditions
were not very good in the Southern Hemisphere most days, just the openings
in the evening which arrived when it was meal time! Despite this over
100 Countries were worked."

S7, SEYCHELLES. Ben, DL7UCX, will be active as S79UCX between April 5-17th.
Activity will be holiday-style on 80-10 meters with operations mainly on

SILENT KEY. OPDX was informed that Bill Hamer, ZL2CD, became a Silent Key
on Sunday, March 29th, at Wellington Hospital. Bill received a QSM for
services to radio but will be remembered by untold thousands of amateur
radio ops all over the world for his QSOs. He was mostly active on CW,
but his voice was heard on SSB. OPDX and its readers would like to send
out our deepest sympathy to the family and friends of ZL2CD.
SOLAR CYCLE 24 NEWS. There was good and bad news reported this past
week. In the middle of the week a good report from Thomas, NZ4O, came
out stating, "A huge solar cycle 24 sunspot group has formed near E30N80
in the northern hemisphere of the Sun. It has pushed the solar flux
index up from 71 to 155 and 6 meters is open globally via F2 layer
propagation." However, bad news reported from NASA indicates that the
sun is plunging into the deepest solar minimum in a century. NASA states
on April 1st, "The sunspot cycle is behaving a little like the stock
market. Just when you think it has hit bottom, it goes even lower.
2008 was a bear. There were no sunspots observed on 266 of the year's
366 days (73%). To find a year with more blank suns, you have to go
all the way back to 1913, which had 311 spotless days: plot. Prompted
by these numbers, some observers suggested that the solar cycle had
hit bottom in 2008. Maybe not. Sunspot counts for 2009 have dropped
even lower. As of March 31st, there were no sunspots on 78 of the year's

SY2, GREECE (Special Event). Greek operators from Veria (SV2/Macedonia
region) will activate the special callsign SY2DDAY between June 4-7th.
Activity is to celebrate the 65th anniversary of the greatest landing
operation in history during WWII, with the participation of seven
countries on the beach of Normandy. Greece participated with 2 warships
and 4 commercial freighter. Activity will be on all modes and bands.

T8, PALAU. Operators Ryosei/JH0IXE and Nobuhiro/JA0FOX are once again
active as T88CW and T88NF, respectively, between now and April 12th.
Activity will be on 80-6 meters using CW, SSB, RTTY, SSTV and PSK31.
This past weekend they were very active on 40/30/20/17/15 meters, mostly
RTTY with some SSB on 15 meters. QSL via their home callsigns.
VK9M, MELLISH REEF (Update). Operators George/AA7JV and Tomi/HA7RY,
continue to be very active from Mellish Reef. As this was being typed,
their log shows that the operators have worked almost 10k QSOs. They
are working very hard on the lower bands and may try to work more on
the higher bands. Their Web page states, "We intend to remain on
Mellish Reef at least until April 10th. After that we will be looking
for a favorable WX window for the return trip to the Australian mainland.
We have supplies until April 15th - maybe 18th, if we stretch them and
reduce power on the higher bands." QSL via HA7RY, direct, LoTW or by the

VK9X, CHRISTMAS ISLAND. Just a reminder. By the time you read this Haru,
JA1XGI/W8XGI, should be active as JA1XGI/VK9 between now and April 11th.
Activity will be on all bands including the lower bands using CW and the
digital modes. QSL via JA1XGI, by the bureau or direct.
YK, SYRIA. Saad, N5FF, in Damascus, is now active as YK1BA until April
10th. He will return home to Texas on April 11th. As usual, the purpose
of the trip is not a DXpedition, so his operating will be spotty, but
he states that he will try to put in as much radio time as possible. He
suggests that his operating hours will be between 2000-2300z or between
0200-0500z and possibly some occasional activities between 1200-1400z.
Saad says, "I suspect that 30, 40, and 80 meters will be the bands of
choice, and I will be active on SSB, CW, and RTTY." However, he was heard
this past weekend on 20 meters SSB. QSL via N5FF (QRZ.com for details).
