i prefer more "optional" ways of disabling features so i wrote the
following (probably horrible, but functional) patch:

i too was plagued by the "Detected Tx Unit Hang" on my Gigabyte
GA-MA78G-DS3H with an Intel PRO/1000 MT installed (see lspci output at the
end of this email) and i heeded all the related bug reports, with none of
them working, until i came across the one that talked about > 4 GB of RAM
(which i have 8 GB in this affected computer). the e1000_disable_dac.patch
worked for me.

i ran across a bug report response that said the e1000 driver would not be
patched to accommodate this buggy hardware (because it's the motherboard's
fault, not the e1000 driver or hardware), so i wrote the included patch to
help encourage Intel to at least provide an in-driver user-configurable
work-around (so i don't have to eternally patch the e1000 driver to disable
64-bit DAC).

thanks for the e1000 driver and the great support.
