Was this a fresh install of the for SLES11 SP1?  I mean fresh with _no_ system 
updates applied.  What could have happened is that the pci.ids file was updated 
from the original which added the device ID to the file even though the driver 
was not updated to actually support the device.  This would explain what you 
are seeing.  

The SLES11 SP2 has support for the device already.  You can also request SuSE 
to have an e1000e driver update for SLES11 SP1 which would also add the needed 
support.  You will need to contact SuSE for that.
