Group Pushes Ban on Cutting Old Trees

A Southern California-based organization on Thursday launched a statewide
petition drive to place a controversial initiative on the November ballot
banning the cutting of old oaks, redwoods or any tree 150 years or older.
The proposed "Heritage Tree Preservation Act" -- sponsored by the Citizens
Campaign for Old-Growth Preservation -- calls for the permanent protection
of all old-growth trees and timber that stands on non-federally owned
forestlands. Old growth is defined as "trees that were alive in the year
California became a state (1850)." Timber companies and industry
representatives Thursday were quick to denounce the initiative. (02/01/02)
