Students Take Lead on Global Warming Action

Saying they're frustrated by the Bush administration's refusal to sign the
Kyoto climate treaty, students at colleges and universities across the
country have started taking their own steps to combat global warming.
They're doing greenhouse gas iventories, measuring carbon dioxide and other
emissions produced by everything from electricity consumption to commuting.
The goal is to figure out how campuses can meet or even exceed emissions
reduction standards prescribed in the Kyoto treaty without waiting on the
federal government to sort out its policy. This weekend, about 70 students
and faculty representing 27 colleges and universities met at Lewis & Clark
College to share what they've learned and to launch a new college climate
response network. (02/11/02) Oregonian
