University of Kentucky
Dean
College of Arts and Sciences

The University of Kentucky seeks an innovative and forward-looking Dean of
its College of Arts and Sciences, with a starting date of July 1, 2003. The
Dean is the chief executive and academic leader of the College of Arts and
Sciences and reports to the Provost of the University of Kentucky. The
responsibilities of the Dean include academic and administrative leadership
for teaching, research, and service activities; budgetary and fiscal
management; oversight of the daily affairs of the College; development, fund
raising, and alumni relations; outreach activities; and representation of
the interests of the College and the University in the Commonwealth of
Kentucky, the nation, and the world. A major responsibility of this position
is to encourage, inspire, and work effectively with College faculty,
students, and staff, and to assume a leadership role within the University
community.
The University of Kentucky, the state's flagship public land grant
university, has a new administration and administrative structure, an
exciting new atmosphere on campus, and an ambitious new trajectory for
future growth. The Kentucky Legislature has given the University a mandate
to reach Top 20 status among public research universities by the year 2020,
and has supported that mandate with competitive matching grants in the
Research Challenge Trust Fund (RCTF). The new Dean must be prepared to
initiate and respond to these opportunities and challenges with fresh ideas
as well as established approaches. Since 1997, the University has
established 141 new research professorships through the RCTF "Bucks for
Brains" program. In the last year, the University increased the level of
extramural funding by 22.1% to 212 million dollars. The University
established a variety of programs to bring in 51 National Merit Scholars,
272 Governor's Scholars and Governor's School for the Arts students, one
National Achievement Scholar and one National Hispanic Scholar in the
entering class, and to stimulate summer undergraduate research programs for
minority students.
The University of Kentucky is a selective admissions institution with a
total enrollment of 26,000 including 5,600 graduate and professional
students in 19 colleges and schools located on the main campus and in the
Medical Center, offering a full range of undergraduate, graduate, and
professional programs. An additional 8,000 students attend Lexington
Community College. The University faculty and alumni include winners of
Nobel and Pulitzer Prizes along with Guggenheim, Rhodes, and Fulbright
fellowships. The College of Arts and Sciences is home to 3,565
undergraduates and 17% of all University graduate students, and is
responsible for teaching more than half of the course work of all
undergraduate students during their careers. The College comprises 16
discipline-based departments, 12 interdisciplinary programs, and more than a
dozen other freestanding academic enterprises. Its annual budget is 42
million dollars.
The opportunities and advantages of this position as Dean are: an
intellectually engaged and committed faculty of 342 scholars in tenurable
and tenured lines and 30 continuing full-time lecturers; an emerging and
still flexible University structure; a new library with the largest book
endowment of any public university in America; strong support for
educational reform and its funding from state government; the possibility of
a continuing matching fund from state government; a supportive College
Advisory Board; potential for growth in alumni relations; a city and
University with thriving arts, opera, and an emerging technological base; a
central and accessible location in Kentucky's Bluegrass region,
approximately 80 miles south of Cincinnati and 80 miles east of Louisville.
Such a Dean must have the following qualifications: proven leadership and
administrative acumen; commitment to excellence in research, graduate, and
undergraduate education; appreciation of the diverse missions of the
College's physical and natural science, social science, and humanities
disciplines and the multidisciplinary programs; commitment to the goals of
vigorous intellectual life, affirmative action and diversity in higher
education; an extensive record of scholarly achievement and significant
involvement in graduate education in one of the disciplines represented
within the College or in a related area; personnel and budgetary experience;
an earned doctorate; and qualifications commensurate with tenure at the rank
of Professor in one of the disciplines within the College.
Applicants should include a letter summarizing relevant experiences in
leadership, administration, and academics; a statement of philosophy on
balance of the liberal arts undergraduate experience, the research
enterprise, and land grant service; a current curriculum vitae; and the
names, addresses, e-mail addresses, and telephone numbers of four
references.
Review of applications will begin on November 15, 2002 and continue until
the position is filled. Applications from and nominations of women and
minorities are strongly encouraged.
