You can also use pycharm community edition, which is under an Apache 2.0
license.

As far as FOSS as a priority, sure. This can certainly be on my wishlist. The
same as my wish to use the programming language that is empirically best to
present to CS1 learners. As we all know, there are many factors that go into
educational design, and we have to make tough calls. Particularly for the
introductory classroom, my priority is for the best experience for the learners
to set them up for success in their later coursework.

Right now we have more learners than normal facing physical health, mental
health, housing, and food insecurity due to COVID-19. I will not prioritize
open-source software over my learners' experience. There are some resources
that are free but not FOSS and are a dramatically better fit for my learners.

The same goes for finding textbook materials. I'm intro courses include
elements of CS1 but with a heavier emphasis on EUD, meaning that standard CS1
books are rarely a perfect or complete fit. I will always do my best to use
OER, but not to the detriment of the learner experience. I've found them for
some but not all of my classes. For those I couldn't, I found books that are
$20 or free as a library ebook and provide an immensely valuable boost from the
open alternatives. It just depends on what you are teaching.

More specific: It is gratis, not free software.

Please only use free software in education.
