I have seen a lot of postings about people complaining that they cannot
install or configure Endian Firewall community 2.0

I had similar problems on a prticular machine at the office, while on
another machine I had no problems whatsoever.

So to give back to the community that has given me this great firewall, I'd
like to offer this simple Howto out of my experience with Endian Firewall, a
really great piece of software.

Endian Firewall Community 2 is a complete Linux distro bundled with firewall
and proxy software that you install on a sacrificial PC with LAN and WAN
adapters.

To install:
1. Download the ISO image from
http://www.endian.it/en/community/download/iso/
2. Then burn the ISO image onto a blank CD with CD burning software like
Nero
3. Put the CD into your sacrificial PC (Note everything on the PC is wiped
off), and boot from the CD.
NOTE: Some PC BIOS'es do not want to read the interleaving on the CD
correctly. Dont worry, if it happens you need to download Smart Boot
Manager, a tiny Floppy boot software that will allow you to boot from the
CD. You can find it here: http://btmgr.webframe.org/download.html#binary)
Simply download the files, go to the command prompt (dos) and use the exe to
make the disk. Insert the disk into the sacrificial PC and boot from the
stiffy, now select CDROM and it will continue to boot the EFW cd as usual.
4. Answer all the questions, make sure you specify and note the IP address
of the GREEN interface, as well as your passwords. Note the install is
different from IpCop in that everything is not specified during the install
- dont worry you can change everything in the web-based management. After
you have answered all the questions the PC reboots and confronts you with a
linux login. This is where you will need a second PC.
5. Connect a cross-over cable between your EFW PC and your setup PC running
your favorite internet browser, or alternatively use an ethernet switch with
two straight ethernet cables.
6. Open a command prompt and ping the GREEN interface IP address you
specified during install. If nothing happens, it means that the install has
assigned that IP address to a different card. For those familiar with Linux
- forget about using ifconfig to determine which card it is - EFW uses br0
(bridge) for the Green interface, but you cannot see in the command line to
which card it is linked. Therefore, by trial and error, try each LAN card
until the ping is successful.
7. Now open your internet browser and go to the setup URL:
http://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx or alternatively https://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:10443 where
the bunch of x'es is the IP address of your Green interface that you were
able to ping successfully.
8. The default username is "admin" and the password is that which you
specified during the install.
9. Go to the Network Configuration on the left menu and go through the
process to select which adapter you want as which IP etc.
>From here on the online manual is pretty useful.
