It helps to thread a nut onto a screw before you cut the end off. When you are done cutting and filing, removing the nut acts to "chase" the threads and clean them up a little.

I took the screw out of the keyer to avoid damaging it while performing
this alteration.

YMMV, but you can always order the screw if you have an epic fail.
